Thoughts on Mindfulness in OT

I was browsing twitter, and came across a pretty interesting article titled "Mindfulness and Occupational Therapy: Your New Secret Power." It sparked my interest because who doesn't want a new secret power? The article was a great read, and I feel that it reflected occupational therapy (OT) pretty spot on. One of the major aspects of OT is holistic healthcare. This means looking at a person as a whole, and not just seeing them as a disease, illness, or disability. An OT looks at their client's mind, body, and soul. That being said, this article gives a great definition of mindfulness. The article says, "Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing a nonjudgemental awareness on the present moment." This can help with depression, anxiety, pain management, and also "engagement in occupations." I love how this article focuses on the mind and psychological aspects of injury and disabilities. It really incorporates the different struggles a client will face, when they are taken away from the occupations they need and want to do. As a future OT, it is reassuring to know that there are tools to target the psychological aspects of injury and disabilities.
