Expanding on Theory
The theory that I chose is the Allen’s Cognitive Disabilities Model (CDM). This theory is a MoP or a Model of Practive, which means it is the toolbox. The main idea of this theory is to integrate the client’s cognitive ability with his or her functional abilities to complete tasks that they are willing and want to perform. This model uses six different levels of cognitive functioning and they are (1) automatic actions, (2) postural actions, (3) manual actions, (4) goal directed actions, (5) exploratory actions, and (6) planned actions. Each level consists of cognitive performance patterns and the scoring ranges from 0-6 (0 being generalized reflexive actions and 6 being normal functioning). The main goal of the CDM is to develop new strategies to handle their occupations while at the same time maintaining the skills they already have. This MoP is used for all ages child, adolescent, adults, and elderly. Determining if this model is functional will depend on each client individually. This will be determined by the goals set for the client. Short term goals will match their current performance and long term goals will match their predicted functioning. One thing the OT will be measuring with this model is functional history in ADLs and IADLs. The three main terms for this theory are cognitive ability, functional ability and goals.
