Knowledge check #19

Today in class I learned about Health Literacy. Prior to this class I knew how important it is to use language that is understandable for clients, but I don’t think I really realized the statistics about this problem. Knowing that many people have low literacy rates really puts it in perspective how important it is to check and make sure people understand everything that you have told them. What is common knowledge to us is not going to be our clients. We also discussed about the Health 2020 vision, which we have discussed before, but it was nice to reminded how important this is. Making clients and people in general aware of health determinants, and also making them aware of how they can progress.

Thoughts on Mindfulness in OT

I was browsing twitter, and came across a pretty interesting article titled "Mindfulness and Occupational Therapy: Your New Secret Power." It sparked my interest because who doesn't want a new secret power? The article was a great read, and I feel that it reflected occupational therapy (OT) pretty spot on. One of the major aspects of OT is holistic healthcare. This means looking at a person as a whole, and not just seeing them as a disease, illness, or disability. An OT looks at their client's mind, body, and soul. That being said, this article gives a great definition of mindfulness. The article says, "Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing a nonjudgemental awareness on the present moment." Inside the O'briens

I really enjoyed reading Inside the Obriens  by Lisa Genova. I have heard of HD before, but I never really knew how awful this disease really is until learning about it in Neuro aspects. This book is a great representation of HD, and the repercussions this awful disease has on a family dynamic. This book really hit close to home for me because my dad is a Memphis police officer, and Joe Obrien, who is the father diagnosed with HD, is a Boston police officer. I think this helped me empathize with the family a little more than I would have otherwise. Reflecting on my thoughts of the book the thing that struck me the most was the progression of Katie's and Joe's relationship. Katie always felt less than her sister Meghan, so I think it was important for her to develop this special relationship with her dad during this tough time. Towards the end of the book Joe started doing yoga with Katie, and this time together meant so much to both of them. My greatest take away from this book...
